Switch to new IRCd
Saturday, 19 August 2006
Dear SorceryNet Users,

As you might have heard/read, Sorcery is going to switch to another IRC daemon (server software), called Charybdis.

This switch is going to happen on Sunday the 20th of August, starting from 13:00 UTC (see TimeZoneConverter to convert to your own timezone).

We've made two lists of servers: the First Batch and Second Batch.

Here's the plan in steps:

1. The First Batch servers are taken out of the Round Robin Pools (irc.*). This has already been taken care of.

2. Around 13:00 UTC 20th of August, these client servers will be brought down. Global Notices will be put out in advance so that you know you can expect netsplits. The currently running SorIRCd of these servers will be replaced by the Charybdis daemon, after which these servers will form the first part of the new network.

3. Around 13:30 UTC 20th of August, we change the DNS to point to the new network. All server-specific hostnames of the servers still running SorIRCd will point to the Round Robin Pool irc.* containing only the servers which run the new Charybdis deamon.

4. Around 19:30 UTC 20th of August, the still remaining SorIRCd servers will be shut down. If you are still connected to the SorIRCd network at this time, you should automatically get connected to a server running the new IRC daemon. We however hope you already moved to the servers with the new deamon before this time, for your and our convenience.

To make sure everybody gets connected to the servers running the new daemons, you will recieve multiple Global Notices telling you how to connect to the "new" network between 13:30 and 19:30 UTC. You might consider these notices to be spam, but they are only there to make sure nobody stays behind.

Please help us help you, and follow these instructions as soon as they are presented to you.

If you have any questions what so ever about this entire project (the moving itself, or the new IRC daemon), don't hesitate to ask them either in #Sorcery or in reply to this mail.

With kind regards,

The SorceryNet Team.
